Building a 10 × 10 slab
A 10 × 10 pad does three different jobs, and each one changes the spec a little. Under a shed, set 1/2-inch anchor bolts in the wet concrete along the sill line, every 4 to 6 feet, so the building bolts down instead of sitting loose. Under a hot tub, the slab has to be dead level and the filled weight matters: a six-person tub runs about 5,000 pounds with water and people, roughly 50 pounds per square foot, well inside what 4 inches over 4 inches of compacted gravel carries. Run the electrical conduit under the slab before the pour. For a patio, 4 inches with 6 × 6 welded wire mesh is plenty, and a control joint is optional at this size.
Pour day at this size
Form with 2 × 6 boards if you want a true 4 inches; a 2 × 4 on edge gives you 3.5. Dig 8 inches, compact 4 inches of crushed stone, and set the mesh on chairs so it sits in the middle of the slab instead of on the gravel. Two people can mix and place this in a morning with a rented mixer. Buy the bags a day early and keep them off the ground and dry.
